2018 Manistee National Forest Festival Event Schedule

The Forest Festival Planning Committee is working diligently on the 2018 schedule!  We would like to say thank you to our Committee, Sponsors and the Community on all their hard work to present this line up of events. Below you’ll find a list of Festival Favorites and some new comers to the Festival line up for 2018 as they are confirmed!

Daily Events beginning on June 29th and ending on the final day (July 4th) unless otherwise noted:


Festival Market Place – June 29th, June 30th, July 1st, 2nd & 3rd, 10:00 am – Dusk; July 4th 10:00 am – 5:00 pm
This annual Festival favorite brings a variety of goods to check out as you enjoy the warm weather and festivities along First Street Beach! There is bound to be something for everyone at the Marketplace!

Anderson Midway Carnival – June 29th, 2:00 pm – Dusk; June 30th, July 1st, 2nd & 3rd 12:00 pm – Dusk ; July 4th 12:00 pm – 5:00 pm
A family owned and operated traveling carnival serving the state of Michigan. Traveling Theme Park with thrilling rides, tasty carnival fare and games of skill combine with superior customer amenities! Ride the rides and play the games during your days out in the sunshine! Armbands $20; tickets $1.25 each, 10 for $10 or 20 for $20.  Rides take 3-4 tickets.

Whispering Pines Animal Kingdom – July 1st & 2nd 10:00 am – Dusk, FREE EVENT
A mobile exhibit that has a variety of animals from around the world from farm animals to exotic animals – it’s a zoo on wheels that’s fun for everyone!

Little Smilin’ Choo Choo
Cruise the First Street Beach loop on the Little Smilin’ Choo Choo. Remember, “You’re never too old to ride the train”!  
$3 per person.


Music on the Beach 
Enjoy a day at the beach while listening to some groovy summer tunes coming at you from local favorite DJ Cole Black!
Location: 1st Street Beach, Manistee


Automobiles in Manistee Exhibit
Visit the Manistee County Historical Museum at 425 River Street to learn about automobiles in Manistee! $1 for Students, $3 for Adults, $8 for Families

Forest Service Bus Tour – 10 am – 1 pm
This annual tour of the Manistee Forest makes multiple stops throughout for you to explore. Bring a sack lunch and drink for the lunch stop at Spirit of the Woods Conservation. The tour is free and runs from 10 am – 1 pm, call 231-723-2211 to reserve your seat.


Trolley Tours – 10 am – 4 pm
Trolleys run around Manistee, giving you a tour of our lovely city! The tours start at 10 am with the last trip departing at 4 pm. Tickets are $6 for Adults, $3 for Seniors/Disabled and youth 3 – 16


Chalk Art – 4 pm, FREE EVENT
For ages 5 – 10, with 3 age groups drawing chalk artwork, prizes for participating children and chalk provided. Free Event at the Fountain on River Street.


Lion’s Fish Boil – 4:30 pm – 7:30 pm
The Manistee Lions Club invites you to enjoy their famous fish boil at the Festival Tent at the Lions Pavilion First Street Beach. Advance Adult Tickets $9 at various businesses. At the door $10 for Adults and $5 for Children. Menu: Boiled fish, potatoes and onions topped with hot butter, coleslaw, rolls, lemonade and coffee. Hot dogs available for children. 100% percent of the profits will be donated to the Vogue Theatre to purchase assisted listening, descriptive audio and closed caption technology and equipment.


Teen Dance – 7 pm – 9 pm FREE EVENT
This FREE event is for youth 6th thru 12th grade. There will be  concessions available and music by DJ Cole Black. So spread the word, grab your friends and be ready to have a great time at the Armory Youth Project!

You’re A Good Man Charlie Brown – 7:30 pm
A musical to delight the whole family! Presented by Manistee Civic Players at Manistee High School, 525 12th Street. Tickets available by calling 231-723-7188 or at the door.  Underwritten by Filer Credit Union and Manistee News Advocate.

Manistee Firecracker 5K Run/Walk + 1K Fun Run – 8 am
Road race to support the Manistee Community Track. $25 by June 23; $30 on race day.  Manistee High School, 525 12th Street.


Sandcastle Contest – 9 am – 3 pm, FREE EVENT
This family fun event will take place all day on the beach at Douglas Park, First Street Beach.  
Judging will take place at 3pm; First Place will receive a trophy and their picture on the Manistee National Forest Festival Facebook page. Presented by Sports Ink Screen Printing & Embroidery  and Lucky Lizard Awards & Gifts.


Manistee World of Arts & Crafts Show – 9 am – 5 pm
Enjoy over 90 select artists and craftsmen participating in this unique juried arts and craft show! See beautiful carvings, paintings, jewelry, pottery, photography and more while enjoying delicious food and entertainment. Children can enjoy interactions with police and fire vehicles. Fun for the whole family.

Located at Red Szymarek Park on the corner of 5th Avenue and Monroe St.

Jiingtamok (Pow Wow) – 11 am
Event opens at 11 AM Saturday with vendors and dancing begins with Grand Entries at 12 noon and 7 PM. Sunday the site opens at 11am with Grand Entry at Noon. Native vendors offering art, cultural crafts and food available. It will be held at the gathering Grounds located behind the Trading Post (C-Store) across US 31 from the Casino. Open to all, there is no admission charge. No Alcohol or drugs allowed.


Little Big Shots Talent Show Finals – 1 pm – 3 pm
Manistee’s Lil Big Shots Talent Show highlights the talents of children ages 3 – 13 and will be on the Entertainment Stage at First Street Beach.(Auditions will be held on 5/26/18 from 1 pm – 3 pm and Rehearsal is 6/23 from 1pm-3 pm at Manistee Inn & Marina, 378 River Street). Admission is $10 and proceeds benefit the Blue Tigers Scholarship Fund.


Live Music on the Porch – 1:30 pm – 4:30 pm, FREE EVENT
Enjoy live music outside on the porch, wine and cider tasting and wine by the glass. Snacks available for purchase. Enjoy the sounds of Chris Skellenger at Douglas Valley Winery, 5375 Douglas Valley Drive. FREE to attend! Douglas Valley Winery is celebrating 10 years in business!


Summer Sound Waves Concert – 6 pm – 12:30 am
Presented by West Shore Bank, this concert brings you great music down on the beach! Enjoy the sounds of local favorites Cousin Curtiss and Clear Heels as they warm up the crowd up for the headliner, The Breakfast Club! Once the headliner hits the stage the concert will require an admission cost, where the Chicago based cover band will rock the night away with all of your favorites from the 80s to now! NO CHARGE IF YOU ARRIVE BEFORE 8 PM; beginning at 9:30 pm attendees must be 21 and over, admission $5 per person.

Pancake Breakfast – 8 am – 1 pm
“It’s a Tradition!” You, your family, friends and neighbors are invited to start your day with this “Forest Festival Breakfast Bang!” We’re serving stacks of flapjacks and other yummy and delicious items. Service with a smile and a promise that you won’t walk away hungry! All proceeds will benefit the Manistee Community Track Project. Advance Tickets are $6 for Adults, $4 for ages 5 – 12, ages 5 and under FREE, tickets at the door are $7 for adults, $5 for ages 5 – 12, ages 5 and under FREE. Manistee Lumberjack Competition – 1 pm – 3 pm
Presented by Watson Country and Ram Trucks, see the Lumberjacks in action!  Be amazed at their lumberjack skills in several categories, like ax throw, chainsaw competition, 2-Man crosscut and water boil to name a few.  First Place wins a chainsaw from Will Zoscsak Logging & Trucking, Inc.

Scottville Clown Band – 4:00 pm – 6:00 pm – FREE EVENT
The Clown Band is back again bringing their humor and musical stylings down at the Entertainment Area at First Street Beach! This popular event is free to the public, so bring a chair, blankets and be ready to dance at the Festival Entertainment Area!! Make sure you stick around for the 4th of July parade where the Scottville Clown Band will be marching!

Manistee National Forest Festival Beard and Moustache Contest – 6:30 pm
Presented by Jaime B Cosmetology & The Fillmore of Manistee. Join us as a spectator or participant! Pre registration required by June 22. Contestants will check in June 30 between 1 pm 
– 3 pm at the Forest Festival Concert Venue on First Street Beach. Enter the facial hair category that best fits you, and/or the corresponding artistic facial hair category of your choice.  JULY 1, COMPETITION DAY contestants must check in at the Forest Festival Concert Venue on First Street Beach in the Lions Pavilion at 5:15 pm
Each category will have 3 winners with 1 person winning Best of Show.
Admission: Contestants -$10 per person; Spectators FREE, donations will be accepted.  Proceeds benefit the Armory Youth Project.


Bed Races – 6:30 pm
Gather your friends, families, cheer squads and super fans as you assemble your team and race! This is an all ages event to raise money for charity. There is no entry fee and winnings go to the charity of your choice. Contact the Jaycees for more information –
manisteejaycees@gmail.com. The races will take place on Division Street by Wahr Hardware at 6:30 pm.

Beach Buddies Kids Parade & Activities – 11:30 am – 1:30 pm – FREE EVENT
Calling all kiddos, dress up as your favorite beach buddy character (anything beach related) and meet at Lighthouse Park! FREE lunch provided by Manistee Area Public Schools Satellite Program, while mingling with special guest mascots, gifts from the US Forest Service, face painting, duck pond, and a scavenger hunt! At 1 pm, the Forest Festival Prince & Princess will be crowned at Lighthouse Park and will lead the parade immediately following. The Prince & Princess will also participate in the Independence Day Parade on July 4th. Prizes will be awarded for best costumes, open to all children and fun for all!

Prince & Princess Pageant Crowning Ceremony – 1:00 pm – FREE EVENT
The Forest Festival Prince and Princess will be crowned for all to see and the new royalty will then lead the parade immediately following around Lighthouse Park.

The Ragbirds – 7:30 pm
Enjoy the sound of The Ragbirds, a band from Ann Arbor that plays everything from bluegrass to electronica. They have developed a reputation as one of the most dynamic, high spirited, live bands in roots music! Tickets are $15 – $27 depending on seating. Visit ramsdelltheatre.org for more details. Friends of the Library Book Sale – 9 am – 5 pm, FREE EVENT
Check out the giant indoor and outdoor used book sale. Books, DVDs, CDs, there’s something for all ages.
Located behind the Manistee County Library at 95 Maple Street.

Fireworks Over Lake Michigan – 10:30 pm
The Little River Casino Resort and Little River Band of Ottawa Indians present the 2018 Fireworks Show.  This year’s display is triple previous years and will bring your family the quintessential 4th of July experience! Watch the fantastic display of fireworks to music at First Street Beach or Fifth Avenue beach for the best views! Music will be broadcast on 101.5 The Mitten.


Flag Raising Ceremony – 9:45 am
Held prior to the Independence Day Parade a tribute to  remember those who have served and are currently serving our country.
On the corner of Division Street & River Street Veterans will raise the flag as the National Anthem is sung. Thank you for your service!



Independence Day Parade – 10:00 am

Travels west on River Street from Division Street to the Armory Youth Project parking lot, providing a view of  all of the floats, marchers and other fun parade participants as we recognize our Independence as a nation!

Duck Race – 1:30 pm

This Festival favorite pits hundreds of rubber yellow ducks against each other as they are dumped off the Maple Street Bridge as they plunge into the water to race down the river to the finish line by the Elk’s Lodge, where members of the Manistee County Sheriff’s Department Marine Patrol will scoop out the ducks! Prizes for 1st, 2nd, 3rd and Last Place! License #R47765.

Port City Pet Pageant – 3 pm, Registration required FREE EVENT
Your pet has what it takes to be a champion! Join us for the 7th annual Port City Pet Pageant where our furred, feathered and scaled friends will be judged the best of the best. Categories include: cutest, biggest, smallest, oldest, best dressed, most patriotic, best trick and twin (pet and owner look alike). From the winners of each category the Best in Show will be crowned. Winners in each category receive a medal and bragging rights for a year. It’s free to enter a pet in as many categories as you like and free to come cheer on your favorite! Entertainment Area at 1st Street Beach

Onekama Block Party  5 pm – 8 pm
Stroll the business district of Onekama for a fun evening of family activities, food, music and great giveaways!

Jaycees Beach Bash  7 pm – 11 pm
The Beach Bash is a brand new event to bring the party down to the beach! This 21 and up event will feature music from local band Clear Heels and a Traditional Polynesian dance and Fire Show from Aloha Chicago! Enjoy drinks from North Channel Brewery and Iron Fish Distillery while taking in the beach atmosphere and entertainment!
Admission: $20 per person.

Bear Lake Days
A community festival, which features family friendly events, including a parade, fireworks, food vendors, entertainment and much more!

Without their generous support the organizers and volunteers would not be able to bring in the attractions, events and continue the signature events that have made this Manistee County's premier festival for 82 years.
